The Delegation of Virginia Commonwealth University visited University of Sanya

On July 3rd, the delegation coming from Virginia Commonwealth University visited University of Sanya. In order to strengthen cooperation relationship and promote the internationalization of higher education, both sides signed the cooperation memorandum for further exchange on both academic and culture. DR. Michael Rao, President of Virginia Commonwealth University, Gillbrundin, Director of Global Education Office of Virginia Commonwealth University, Chao Zhang, Director of International Department of Hainan Education Department, Zoe Che, Vice President for H.R of University of Sanya, Xiaoqi Wu, head of School of Art Design, Xiaoyong Chen, head of School of Health Industry Management attended the meeting.


During the meeting, Zoe Che, Vice President of USY extended warm welcome to the delegation group leading by Michael Rao, and briefly introduced University of Sanya. She said China has attached great importance to the construction of Hainan free trade zone (port), with the support and favorable policies; it will bring new opportunities for the internationalization of higher education. President Michael Rao also believed that Hainan had a great potential and he can predict a bright future for the development of Hainan. Further, Virginia Commonwealth University has started to establish cooperation relationships with universities in China since 2014, he wished that the two sides will take this as a starting point and conduct further cooperation in more areas.

After the detailed discussion, two sides signed the cooperation memorandum to strengthen the cooperation. The potential cooperation areas will include the feasibility plan for exploration of new knowledge, strengthening academic and cultural exchange and creating more international educational platforms for students.


Virginia Commonwealth University was founded in 1838, and was located in Richmond, Virginia. As a public research university with almost 200 years of history, it had 16 faculties, art and design related majors were ranked as No. 2 in the United States and No.1 in public university ranking; the medical schools are also renowned throughout the United States. Also, in the latest ranking released by U.S. News, Virginia Commonwealth University was awarded as one of top universities.
